STORY OF ME
My name is Abby and I am 6 years old. When I was 3.5 years old DNA testing confirmed that I have a genetic mutation responsible for RETT Syndrome. This rare neuro development disorder begins to show in early childhood and almost exclusively effects girls. It doesn’t run through generations and it’s such a random thing.
I am losing the ability to use my hands, legs and my language skills that began to develop has slipped away too. My parents keep a busy schedule for me with a host of different therapies: speech therapy, physical therapy and occupational therapy to list a few. It takes a lot to coordinate and manage everything I need. My family was devastated by my diagnosis and it caught them by surprise. I know they dreamed of a different life for me.
My family are my arms, my legs and my voice. I hope one day I will be able to tell my parents how much I love them. And I know I will one day.
My goal is to bring awareness to RETT Syndrome research, help to push science forward to find a cure and help girls with the same diagnosis as mine to live their life to the fullest.
