ABOUT RETT SYNDROME
Rett syndrome is a rare genetic neurological disorder that affects 1 in 10,000 females (and even more rarely in males) and begins to display itself in missed milestones or regression at 6-18 months. Rett syndrome leads to severe impairments, affecting nearly every aspect of life: ability to speak, walk, eat and breathe easily. The hallmark of Rett syndrome is near constant repetitive hand movements while awake. Cognitive assessment in children with Rett syndrome is complicated, but we know that they understand far more than they can communicate to us, evidenced by their bright and attentive eyes, and their ability to express a wide spectrum of moods and emotions.
Rett syndrome is an incredibly complex disorder. We believe that a cure will require pursuing multiple treatments, including gene therapy, treatment medications and neuro-habilitative therapies and research strategy targets every possible approach. Rett Syndrom Research Trust remain committed to creating solutions for today, while they work to create a world without Rett syndrome tomorrow.
RESEARCH TRUST
The development of any new drug or therapy for Rett syndrome or any disorder must follow the path that regulatory bodies (such as the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) or European Medicines Agency) have established. This path helps to assure that any new therapy is safe and effective when it is made available to the public. Because of the challenges involved in developing a new therapy, the overall path takes 10–25 years to complete.
A choice to participate in a clinical trial is a big decision for a family. Many regulations and safety measures are in place to ensure a loved one’s health and safety and minimize risks.
